'I AM' is a series of mixed media collages that explores childhood memories and ambitions, inspired by the artist's story of discovering his passion while collecting recycled objects and aluminum scraps on the streets of Nima Accra and his life in a boarding school, drawing and writing on walls. The piece demonstrates a commitment to community and appreciation of cultural heritage through an interactive approach of juxtaposing kid-like drawings and Ghanaian Adinkra symbols alongside an assemblage of toys and jigsaw puzzles. Wrapped around the portrait are African wax, Kente, Batik, and Tie and dye fabrics, scraps solicited from seamstresses across Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, and New York, referencing a group portrait, celebrating the familial and societal impact of people of African descent whose lives and work often go unnoticed in global development.
The composition is a conceptual representation of hope, wisdom, strength, positive energy, and self-love.
